- <p> DIED. MAURICE ABRAVANEL, 90, conductor; in Salt Lake City, Utah.
- Born in Greece of Spanish-Portuguese parents, Abravanel studied
- composing in Berlin under Kurt Weill before making his conducting
- debut at 21. With the rise of Nazism, he fled to Paris, where
- he became music director of George Balanchine's Les Ballets
- 1933, then went on to New York City, where, at 33, he became
- the Metropolitan Opera's youngest conductor. But it was as music
- director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, which he brought to
- prominence from near extinction in 1947, that he made his mark.
