  15. <p>     DIED. MAURICE ABRAVANEL, 90, conductor; in Salt Lake City, Utah.
  16. Born in Greece of Spanish-Portuguese parents, Abravanel studied
  17. composing in Berlin under Kurt Weill before making his conducting
  18. debut at 21. With the rise of Nazism, he fled to Paris, where
  19. he became music director of George Balanchine's Les Ballets
  20. 1933, then went on to New York City, where, at 33, he became
  21. the Metropolitan Opera's youngest conductor. But it was as music
  22. director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, which he brought to
  23. prominence from near extinction in 1947, that he made his mark.
